Cymbidiums for all Seasons

The Cymbidium orchid's profuse floral display is the backbone of the orchid interest. Its versatile colors, long lasting quality, and profusion all combine to make the best buy in orchids today. Tall sprays of ten to twenty 4-inch blooms in white, pink, yellow, green, red, and all combinations, lasting one to two months; those are cymbidiums!
Cymbidiums are hybrids of Southeast Asian orchids, built mostly from a half dozen species native to the foothills of the Himalayas and mountainous areas of Burma, Thailand, and Vietnam. While the peak of cymbidium season happens during Spring, the four months from February through May, hybrids have been developed over the past 100 years so that now cymbidium season ends in June and begins in July!
Cymbidiums make wonderful garden and patio plants in sub-tropical areas such as California, and may be displayed indoors when in bloom. Most cymbidiums are not suited for year round culture in the house, as they require high filtered light and cool temperatures (winter nights below 55F in order for spikes to initiate). In less temperate parts of the country, cymbidiums are grown out of doors in the summer and, in winter, indoors in a conservatory, greenhouse, or basement under lights, with night temperatures below 55F and as low as 27F. See our page on Cymbidium Culture for further growing instructions.
Top Cymbidium Varieties
Classic, time-tested beauties for the beginner or expert.

Alba Cymbidiums
Pure whites, greens, and yellows.

Ultraminiature Cymbidiums
Also known as Teacup orchids because of their petite size. Generally in 3-inch pots standing about 10-12 inches, these grow with the same culture as the big cymbidiums.

Awarded and Famous Name Varieties
SBOE offers the largest selection of famous name Cymbidiums in the world: over 1500 varieties. These are individual clones awarded by judging authorities around the world, including rare plants over 100 years old, as well as many of the most recently awarded varieties. Many are priced at $25 per pot, while some are more. Let us help you select the kinds and colors you like, or see our extensive lists:

Standard Cymbidiums
These are the classic medium-to-large blooming varieties; grown in pots or up into tubs they make very full, beautiful shows of blooms, mostly in the months of winter and spring.
Miniature Cymbidiums
Delightful miniature cymbidiums come in a wide variety of types, sizes, colors, and seasons. The flowers are smaller than standard-size blooms and often very prolific on plants that are generally more compact. The majority bloom in winter and spring, while others bloom in summer and fall.
Cymbidium Backbulbs
Backbulbs, older leafless bulbs which have resprouted, are an economical way to add to your collection and should bloom in two to four years. Individually selected backbulbs are 1/2 the listed price per variety (for a $25 plant, a backbulb is $12.50).
Awarded Backbulb Collection
Ten different awarded back bulbs (our selection, bare-root) for $50, including shipping.

Unlabeled Backbulbs -5 bulbs for $10 (plus $8 shipping) or 100 bulbs for $100 (plus $25 shipping)
