Book: Vanilla Orchids Natural History and Cultivation
By Ken Cameron. 2011. A most delightful read authored by an expert botanist who has also been nationally honored for his public speaking and writing. This book describes the taxonomy and distribution of many species of Vanilla
and related genera. The remainder intricately describes the transformation from pale-green, scentless flowers on a tropical vine, to the dark, fragrant liquid in our kitchen cupboards. Interspersed throughout are stories and artifacts chronicling a variety of interactions between people and Vanilla
, including Thomas Jefferson's vanilla ice cream recipe. Hardbound book with 212 pages, including 140 mostly color plates (on 64 pages).
We are so honored that Ken Cameron will be the guest author at our 2015 SBOE Summer Open House, July 10-12. Ken will speak on Vanilla
at 7:30pm Friday July 10th, 2015, at a joint meeting of the Orchid Society of Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara Cymbidium Society, in Fellowship Hall of Trinity Lutheran Church, located at 909 North La Cumbre Road, Santa Barbara.
