Orchid of the Day: May 4, 2022
Epidendrum parkinsonianum
Epidendrum parkinsonianum
Beloved by new orchid-growers and long-time hobbyists alike for it fragrance, dramatic foliage, and ease of growing into magnificent, cascading specimens. The parents of these excellent seedlings were selected for their superb foliage, large flower size, and high flower count! The somewhat succulent leaves have a sturdy, pendant growth habit which is a beautiful visual contrast to the elegant blossoms: slender, golden-green petals frame a large and dramatic white lip.

The real treat happens at night: pollinated by moths in nature, the flowers emit a sweet, almost citrus-like fragrance. The flowers are also long lasting, often over a month! The natural habitat of this cold-tolerant plant spans from Mexico to Panama in forested mountainous areas, so it prefers a little more shade than Cymbidiums or Cattleyas.

Established seedlings aged ten years - mature foliage of leaves at least 11 inches long! 'Seedlings' are the offspring of pollination; as siblings these may be very similar, yet each seedling is unique and no two seedlings are truly identical in precise color or shape. Enjoy!

Temperature Tolerant. May-June blooming. Species from Central America.
