This historic cultivar was awarded November 24, 1931, when it was shown by the cross's originators, McBeans of Sussex, England. Grand Monarch results from crossing of Cymbidiums hookerianum and Wiganianum (eburneum x tracyanum). A true favorite around here for its beauty, fragrance, early flowering season, compact growth, and willingness to bloom. Its hybrid vigor makes it a good substitute for its heat-intolerant parent hookerianum, although we still do usually grow it under shadecloth, where it gets cool ocean breezes, rather than under glass.
