This 'select' quality form has noticeably larger flowers and a more robust growth habit! Once classified as an Encyclia this species also has many nick-names: 'cockle shell orchid', 'octopus orchid', or the 'black orchid'. The flowers are milky-green with a 'shell' shaped lip (hence the name 'cochleata') of such dark burgundy color it is nearly black!
Historically remarkable as one of the very first orchids of the Americas to be classified into modern-day science! This species is also special as one of a few non-resupinate orchids, meaning the lip remains pointed upward in bloom and seems 'upside-down'. The flowers bloom sequentially along tall, slender stems; so large plants with multiple stems can bloom over several months! Thrives best indoors, yet can do well outdoors in climates that receive no frost.
