Laelia anceps
A beautiful and hardy, easy to grow Mexican species.
Laelia anceps, a native of Mexico but also occurring more rarely in Guatemala and the Honduras, is one of the most common, yet one of the most satisfying orchids. Its ease of care makes it an ideal plant for the beginner as well as the connoisseur.

Laelia anceps' lovely flowers occur in many forms of lavender, white and blue. One of the hardiest for cold tolerance of any of the Cattleya alliance, Laelia anceps are reported as tolerating lows of 22ΊF (-5ΊC) without any damage. High temperatures, up to 90Ί or 100Ί, rarely trouble it. The blooming season for anceps is customarily November through January.

Laelia anceps is noted for being one of the best plants, in subtropical climates, to naturalize on trees around the garden, where regular garden watering is usually adequate. Click here for cultural information on Laelia anceps, or on Mounting Orchids in general.

From the high elevations of Central Mexico, this classic-lavender, fall-blooming, hardy outdoor grower has become one of our favorites at SBOE. Naturalizes beautifully into a garden specimen mounted on a tree, or may be hung in a basket or potted as well. (Unless they are being divided, these really don't need repotting. We simply set a small pot with the original bark in successively larger pots, only with air around the roots.) Has been known to take temperatures as low as 22F. Temperature Tolerant.
